Culturas Unidas launched in early 2024 as a for-profit collective under Growing Ancestral Roots to support immigrant, refugee, and BIPOC food entrepreneurs in Benton and Linn counties.
Unlike traditional business incubators, Culturas Unidas operates as a shared collective model—where entrepreneurs work together to build infrastructure, grow cultural ingredients, share equipment, and co-create access to markets, mentorship, and commercial kitchen space. In its first year, the collective supported over 15 women-led businesses, hosted regular pop-up markets, built an online ordering platform using Jotform, secured a vendor contract with First Alternative Co-op, and implemented foundational food safety systems with guidance from Propeller and RDI. We also successfully supported two Latina entrepreneurs through a two-month cooperative leadership training, preparing them to take on shared governance and help shape the future of the collective.
Our accomplishments reflect both individual progress and collective resilience. Members are currently in the “discovery stage”—developing culturally significant products that resonate with regional customers, learning how to scale production, and navigating health regulations—but most are not yet generating consistent income. The next phase is focused on the “evaluation stage,” where we will strengthen skills in business operations, marketing, pricing for profit, and long-term planning. By investing in the collective model, we provide a low-risk, community-rooted space to test, refine, and grow businesses—ensuring that culturally rooted entrepreneurs have the tools, knowledge, and shared resources needed to achieve sustainable success.
