Happy Fall Equinox!

This year we were lifted by the beauty of both people and plants—gifts from the earth that nourished us in body and spirit. Now, as the season turns and everything begins its return to the earth, we too are reminded to root down, rest, and prepare to rise again. In this cycle, we find the promise of growing back with even more beauty and power.

This past year has been filled with warmth, from the long days of summer harvests to the joy of watching our baby chicks grow into egg-layers. Alongside them, we’ve witnessed the children’s bonds deepen—learning care, patience, and love through tending the animals together. It has been a season of growth for both our flocks and our families.

A Season of Inner Turning

As the sun crosses the celestial equator, we welcome the Fall Equinox—a brief and beautiful moment of balance between light and dark. This turning point invites us to pause, reflect, and shift our energy inward as we prepare for the season ahead.

 A Time of Balance

The word “equinox” means “equal night,” and today, day and night share the sky equally. Across traditions and mythologies, this time has long symbolized the dance between abundance and retreat, light and shadow, doing and being.

 Yin and Yang

In Chinese mythology, the Fall Equinox is tied to the cycles of yin and yang and the reverence of the Moon Goddess, Chang’e. As daylight and darkness stand in balance, yin energy begins to grow stronger, guiding the world toward rest and inward reflection. Chang’e’s story—her ascent to the moon and eternal dwelling there—embodies themes of separation, longing, and transformation, reminding us that this season is a time to honor the beauty of letting go, returning inward, and preparing for renewal.

Chinese Medicine Wisdom

In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), autumn is associated with the Metal element—a time of refinement, release, and return to what is essential.

Just as trees shed their leaves, the Metal element invites us to let go of what no longer serves us. It governs both boundaries and breath, helping us discern what to keep and what to compost—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

“The Metal element gives us our sense of self-worth. It is the sparkle of knowing we are of value, even when the world around us is letting go.”
— Five Element Wisdom

Autumn often surfaces feelings of grief—not just sorrow, but also the poignancy of beauty and impermanence. Chinese medicine does not see grief as pathology, but as a natural and necessary expression of the season.

This is a time to:

  • Mourn losses honestly and without shame
  • Reflect on your values and inner truth
  • Honor what you’ve harvested—both the visible and invisible growth
  • Clear away the excess to create space for clarity

Meditation for the Fall Equinox: The Art of Letting Go

“In the cycle of the seasons, fall is the breath out—the quiet release.”

 Begin

Find a quiet space where you can sit or lie down comfortably. Allow your eyes to close. Feel the ground beneath you. Take a moment to arrive.

Gently bring your awareness to your breath. No need to change anything—just observe. Inhale. Exhale. Let each breath anchor you more deeply into this moment.

 Breathe with the Season

Visualize the fall wind moving through a grove of trees. Watch as the leaves let go—easily, naturally, without struggle. With each in-breath, feel yourself gathering clarity and nourishment. With each out-breath, allow yourself to release something that no longer serves you.

What can I release now—gently, without force?

Let go of old habits, cluttered thoughts, outdated roles, or tight emotions. Let them fall like golden leaves, returning to the Earth.

 Pause in the Balance

Imagine the balance of day and night—equal in measure. Let this image settle in your body. Where can you find balance within? Between effort and rest, speech and silence, doing and being?

Sit with this inner equinox—a moment of stillness, a threshold between seasons.

 Close

Place your hands over your heart. Thank yourself for pausing. Take one more slow, deep breath.

As you open your eyes, carry this sense of release, clarity, and grounded presence with you.

 Let This Be Your Invitation

Let this equinox remind you that balance is not perfection—it is movement, a living rhythm. Honor your harvest. Make space to rest. Reflect, refine, and root inward. The seeds of winter’s dreams are planted now.

Wishing You a Season of Peace
